Mitchell to coach the Wolves?
He was a 10-year member of the franchise and now might be the man to bring a young team back to some level of success. Sam Mitchell is the latest coach to interview for the head coach vacancy created after Kurt Rambis burned out following a mere two seasons at the helm.
Mitchell has a young, but successful, coaching career. He was the 2007 coach of the year while heading up the Toronto Raptors over the coarse of five years. His worst season saw him assemble a record of 27-55, and includes two winning seasons. His team was a mere 8-9 when he was released early in the 2008-09 season.
Even at his worst, the Wolves would be much better off with records such as Mitchell has assembled, and at 47, he’s still plenty young enough to relate to the Wolves’ raw but talented roster. This years with the franchise would also carry a lot of weight. Wins like that would act as a wireless beacon that the Minnesota franchise is ready for a turnaround.
If the team is intent on overlooking a young J.B. Bickerstaff, who’s now moved on to an assistant position with Houston, Sam Mitchell is my next-best choice to take over the reigns at Target Center. He’s be a positive hire for a team that seems ready to improve significantly, even if there may be a couple sub-.500 seasons left before the team takes their game to playoff-caliber level.
