Could Smith land his first 2012 recruit this weekend?

Guard prospect Wally Ellenson of Rice Lake, WI, could become coach Tubby Smith’s first get of the 2012 recruiting class; he’s due to visit Minnesota this weekend and is impressed with Smith despite the team’s struggles last season. Despite being unrated by either Scouts.com or Rivals.com, Ellenson’s being highly recruited, with offers from West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Utah and Nebraska.

With his guard lineup devastated in terms of depth after a turbulent 2010-11 season, Smith could use a talent like Ellenson as a universal insurance policy against further erosion at the position. He’s been relatively quiet so far in the early signing period this year, but look for Coach Smith to start ramping up the volume now that August has arrived.
