Rambis’ job still up in air
Despite franchise-level player Kevin Love’s endorsement, Timberwolves GM David Kahn still hasn’t decided the fate of head coach Kurt Rambis, who just finished year two of a four year contract. The Wolves ranked among the worst defensive teams in the league this past season, but Kahn obviously knows Rambis is a favorite to replace the retiring Phil Jackson with the Lakers, and doesn’t necessarily want to take heat for letting go of a coach who could go to the Lakers and build a great legacy there.
Even so, one has to wonder if LA is having second thoughts about Rambis in light of his two moribund seasons with the Wolves. While the team has been in transition, they are off-pace now for improvement and returning to an NBA Playoffs caliber of play. If the Wolves replace Rambis, it might be a challenge to find someone with as impressive a resume to replace him; if they retain him, he would need to explain to disappointed fans why he’s doing so in light of the team’s lack of improvement.
Meanwhile, word has it that Kevin McHale, the former Wolves GM and coach, has been hired by Houston to coach that team, and is looking for the best supplements to franchise player Yao Ming.
