Shortell expects to challenge Gray

Newly-signed Gophers QB recruit Max Shortell has made no secret of his ambitions, nor his reason for choosing Minnesota over Michigan: he believes he has a real chance to beat out Marquis Gray as the Gophers starting quarterback next season under new head coach Jerry Kill.

Decked out in football togs more often than equestrian clothing, Shortell told the Pioneer Press today, “”They said that if I prove to be one of the better guys, then they have no problem putting me in.” Under the previous regime with the maroon-and-gold, that would have been little more than hot air, but with the new coach comes a new perspective.

Could Shortell end up pushing Gray back to wide receiver? The spring scrimmage could tell the tale.
