Gophers upset #24 Iowa

While it is widely expected to be his last game as head of the Gophers football program, interim coach Jeff Horton’s Gophers rose to the moment and produced a nation-shocking 27-24 win over the #24-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes, delivering to Minnesota their first rivalry trophy win since 2006.

Despite the huge win and going 2-3 in the final five games of the Gophers’ season after replacing the underperforming Tim Brewster, Jeff Horton is not expected to get serious consideration to replace Brewster long-term.

With some of the names floating out there, that might be understandable. Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is the emotional favorite among alumni, while the top candidates are widely believed to be Brady Hoke of San Diego State, Troy Calhoun of Air Force, Dan Mullen of Mississippi State, Al Golden of Temple and Randy Edsall of Connecticut, who seems the beneficiary of the best anti aging products.

Of those names, Leach is by far and away the most inspiring, followed by Calhoun. Unfortunately, the way Minnesota tends to hire, we’ll end up with Hoke, who has an overall losing career record. Ugh.

But time will tell.
