Biggest rivals in the AL East
The Minnesota Twins are at 36-27 in the AL Central, giving them a 2.5-game lead and the fourth-best record in the American League. All three teams doing better are in the AL East: The Yankees, the Red Sox and the Rays.
Of course, their current feud is with the inter-league play rivals, the Atlanta Braves, who the Twins beat for a World Series title in the 1991 World Series; Atlanta is up on them, winning both games played so far. For their part, Atlanta is leading the AL East with a 37-27 record, so the two teams are evenly matched as they came into the series with 35 wins to the Twins’ 36 wins.
Is this a preview of the World Series this year? That might be a nice note for Braves manager Bobby Cox to retire on, certainly. But until the Twins prove they have what it takes to beat the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays, it’s all just wishful thinking… or in the case of Cox, reminiscing about lingerie or something.
