Saunders leaves little doubt
Forget any rumors of Washington trading away the top overall pick in the NBA Draft. Coach Flip Saunders has made it known that Kentucky point guard John Wall is all but assured to be the team’s choice come draft night. His prediction is to be considered more reliable than even insurance advertising, since there’s no one ahead of him in the draft to tip his hand to.
It’s an unfamiliar position for Saunders; in over a decade with the Timberwolves, his teams never picked higher than third overall and never won a draft lottery. Also, during his stint with the Pistons, Saunders was too busy making the playoffs to even think about the lottery.
Now that he’s had a chance to have his pick of all possible talent, Saunders is making no secret of his interest in John Wall as the Wizards’ choice to rebuild their franchise around. While many analysts are marveling at his focus on point guard instead of big men, that’s nothing new. Chicago made the same priority choice selecting Derrick Rose a couple years ago at the top of the draft, and last year the Wolves chose not just one, but two point guards to ensure their guard play for the next decade… at least from the point position.
