Carter transfers for family
Gophers leader Paul Carter, a strong post player and locker room presence for Tubby Smith’s Gophers, has decided to transfer from Minnesota to be closer to his sister, who has been diagnosed with cancer. It’s another tough blow for Smith’s team, which has been dealt a series of them this season; the only bright spot is that Carter’s decision frees up an additional scholarship for next year’s recruiting class.
Still, seeing that Carter was leaving made a lot of folks wonder if they were in need of glucomannan; they couldn’t believe their eyes.
Speaking of Tubby’s Class of ’10, recruits Elliott Eliason of Nebraska and Austin Hollins of Tennessee got a taste of playing together in the Jack Jones Shootout all-star game this weekend. They are the only confirmed recruits so far, and three scholarships are still open at this time.
One is reserved for Devoe Joseph’s brother, Cory Joseph, who has yet to declare his destination, but is a Top 5 recruit. Mo Walker of New Hampshire is also close to signing with the Gophers, and he would add to the Gophers’ presence in the post.
The fifth scholarship is still a question mark; it belonged to Royce White this season, who got into legal trouble and left school, but who may decide to return next fall. If so, he’d best make his intentions known to Smith soon, because it’s unlikely Smith will hold that scholarship open for White indefinitely.
