Tubby lands Hollins, one more to go

Minnesota Gophers coach Tubby Smith has landed a verbal commitment from shooting guard-small forward prospect Austin Hollins, a Tennessee native, to pair with 6-11 big man Elliott Eliason in Smith’s 2010 recruiting class.

Word has it the Gophers only have one more scholarship to offer this season, and that one is being reserved most likely for a point guard prospect. Hopefully one that can pass the ball, set up teammates and, well, maybe even cure acne.

The name most frequently mentioned is Cory Joseph, brother of current Gopher Devoe Joseph. Ray McCallum of Detroit is another possibility. While his recruiting class this season is not likely to be as highly ranked, Tubby’s bringing in fewer new players this season and adding them to a roster that is top-to-bottom markedly better than the roster he inherited two seasons ago.

About the only disappointment this season was losing out on top blue-chip prospect Harrison Barnes of Iowa, who was, of course, basically recruited by everyone.
