Rambis names his assistants
Don’t call Kurt Rambis jealous or shy; in naming his staff of assistant coaches, he’s proven he’s not one to shy away from other talented coaches – even those who sought the position he now holds.
In fact, all of Rambis’ assistants have more head coaching experience than he does; but that’s just the way Rambis wants it. The more talent on the Wolves’ staff, the better, Rambis has indicated in recent interviews. And that includes his coaching staff.
David Wohl was a head coach in the mid-to-late 1980s with the New Jersey Nets. Reggie Theus was Sacramento’s coach for over a year, until partway through last season. And Bill Laimbeer coached the WNBA’s Detroit Shock for seven seasons, including three league championships and four Eastern Conference titles.
Any one of them would make a fine head coach somewhere; but they’ll start building toward that goal by rebuilding Minnesota under Rambis. With mild humor, Rambis told this to the PioneerPress recently:
“I like to be around guys who have aspirations,” Rambis said. “I’m not intimidated by that at all. I want them to be head coaches again someday, just not here. They can get their own jobs.”
Let’s hope no one needs any Tennessee injury lawyers this season; things are starting to look up in Minnesota!
