Vikes’ draft shifts to culture of “Just win, baby!”
When Zygi Wilf hired Brad Childress, it was to usher in the era of accountability with the Vikings; the team’s Sex Boat antics had deeply embarrassed new owner Wilf, and he didn’t want any repeats after a thorough house-cleaning was conducted.
Which has been all fine and well and good; at least until this past weekend’s draft, when apparently the team culture was shifted from accountability to “Just win, baby!” That’s because, unlike most players brought into the Vikings organization over the past three seasons, first-round WR Percy Harvin and second-round OT Phil Loadholt, do not have squeaky-clean records.
Sure, neither are guilty of sleeping in pet beds, depriving pit bulls of a home or anything quite so heinous, but Harvin tested positive for pot at the Draft Combine, while Loadholt’s had a DUI against him.
There’s no question that Loadholt is set to be a solid lineman for a decade, barring injury, or that Harvin has the talent to be a game-breaking difference-maker who can take pressure off Adrian Peterson to do it all by himself; but is this the team that prides itself on character over talent?
Not anymore.
