Two signs of hope for the Wolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves beat Utah 103-102 on Friday, but lost to Denver Sunday night, 110-87, to start the losing streak expected to finish out the five games remaining on their schedule. Owner Glen Taylor has confirmed that within a couple weeks of the regular season ending, he will hire a true GM to run the team, casting aside this year’s “GM by committee” approach in which Taylor worked closely with both Jim Stack and Fred Hoiberg.

While conceding that the Wolves were interviewing candidates both inside and outside the organization, he did make it clear that former team president and current coach Kevin McHale is not a candidate for the position.

And with those words, I’d love to go out and buy some nice patio furniture for Glen Taylor. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Glen!

It’s also murky whether McHale will continue as coach. While Taylor says he expects McHale back, McHale refuses to commit to anything beyond this season and, well… it’s pretty clear the team has quit on him. So would he want to come back, even if Taylor wants him to?

I’ll be blunt: Let’s hope not.

I don’t think any team with its whole franchise sitting out would fare better than our wolves. I think McHale has done a great job, and gives a polished and honest press conference. As for the GM posistion, –don’t think that the other 29 teams around the league aren’t aware of Fred Hoiberg’s smarts, savy, work ehthic and charisma and his other positive atributes that made him such a productive player. If we pass on him, it really shows how incompetent this organization is, –and will give another city and team reason for hope.
