No extension … yet … for Childress

Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress has two seasons remaining on his contract going into next season, and while some are wondering why the coach, who led Minnesota to its first playoff appearance since 2004 and its first NFC North Division title since the Denny Green era, hasn’t received one yet, mark me down as one who is glad Zygi Wilf is waiting before tying his team to Childress for another three to five years.

I mean, give the man a couple Fendi watches or something, but let’s wait and see before adding years on. At mid-season, most folks were still down on Chilly, and it was only a strong November and December that really saved the coach’s job. And a poor playoff performance didn’t help matters.

Before anyone can evaluate whether Childress is worth another three-to-five year commitment, we should at least see how next season goes; if Childress can prove it wasn’t a fluke and he’s now become a match for Lovie Smith and Mike McCarthy, then great! But if not, as long as there are other great coaches out there without a job, like former Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher, I say hold off and make this decision carefully.
