Gophers not without growing pains
Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball coach Tubby Smith may be a legend who has led the Gophers to heights unseen since the heyday of a pre-scandal heyday of Clem Haskins, or perhaps Jim Dutcher in 1982. Still, there are growing pains associated with the turnaround Smith is engineering.
That has become obvious over the last two games, wherein the Gophers have dropped two games, to Northwestern and Purdue, and their shooting percentage for the Purdue game – 27.4 percent – is the lowest for the Gophers since 2004, nearly five years ago.
Much of this is the lack of senior leadership on the team; no Gophers senior is a starter for this year’s squad, and while their freshman and sophomore talent is impressive, they simply aren’t polished players just yet. While some people might recommend the best weight loss pills around for some of Tubby’s post players, I say it’s just more on-court experience that is necessary here.
