McHale’s first win lonely in December

Firing coach Randy Wittman may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but former team vice president and now head coach Kevin McHale is learning that wringing wins out of this young Timberwolves squad he’s assembled is anything but easy, no matter who the coach is.

Late last week, McHale earned his first win as Wolves coach since dismissing Wittman and appointing himself the mid-season replacement, as the team prevailed over the New York Knicks to break a 13-game losing streak and only the team’s fifth win this season.

The team was 4-15 under Wittman before he was dismissed, and since McHale took over, the team has gone 1-8, which is on pace to make them even worse than they were under Wittman. McHale, who lately has looked like he could use some weight loss pills, at least around the ego, may be falling on his sword with this latest move.

Perhaps fall of 2009 will mark the beginning of the post-McHale era in Timberwolves history. Alleluia.
